Hello all! Since this site is all about adding tools to our musical toolboxes and using existing genres in music therapy sessions, I felt it absolutely necessary to bring one of my favorite genres to the fold: Broadway Showtunes. I love musicals and showtunes in general because there is no genre more diverse. From the mega musicals like "Phantom of the Opera", to the record-breaking rap/hip hop musical "Hamilton", to the jazzy stylings of "Cabaret" and "Chicago", there is something for everyone! Here are just a few examples of songs that could be used in sessions.

"My Shot" from Hamilton

-Example idea: discuss the importance of not throwing away your shot and to make the most of your life

"I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Miserables

-Example idea: discuss what happens when life doesn't turn out the way you want it to

"Time Warp" from Rocky Horror Picture Show

-Example idea: physical movement application, and the instructions are already built into the chorus of the song!

"Take Me or Leave Me" from Rent

-Example idea: discuss how it is crucial to embrace one's identity and how you don't need to change for others/value of one's own self

"Being Alive" from Company

-Example idea: discuss the difference between being with someone and being with "some one"

"Seventy-Six Trombones" from Music Man

-Example idea: physical movement application involving marching

"Defying Gravity" from Wicked

-Example idea: discuss how to overcome adversity and not be held back in life

"Mambo" from West Side Story

-Example idea: instrumental play using various percussive instruments

I could list so many more, but this is a great place to start. Enjoy!
